Bridging the Digital Gap: The Journey of the OsiriX-UK User Group
As a Radiologist, the way we interact with images is the foundation of our craft. For many years, however, there was a disconnect between the high-end technology we used in clinical practice and the tools available for teaching and examination.
In 2012, alongside a few colleagues who shared a deep passion for medical education, I decided it was time to bridge that gap. This is the story of how the OsiriX-UK User Group began and how it evolved into a community of over 300 radiologists committed to improving digital education.

The Spark: 2012 and the Need for a Standard
In the early 2010s, “harvesting” images for teaching was often a fragmented and inconsistent process. Formats varied, workflows differed between institutions, and teaching materials rarely reflected real clinical practice. We saw the incredible potential of OsiriX — a powerful DICOM viewer designed specifically for the macOS environment — to address this.
Our goal was simple but ambitious: to streamline how radiology images were collected and organized for teaching. We wanted to ensure that whether you were a trainee in London or a consultant in Edinburgh, the “digital language” of education remained consistent. Establishing this shared approach proved especially valuable in high-stakes settings such as the FRCR 2B examinations, where familiarity with real-world workflows is essential.
Building a Partnership with the Pioneers
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey was our collaboration with the OsiriX development team in Geneva. We reached out to them with our vision of a UK-based educational collective, and they embraced it with remarkable generosity.
In those early days, as we held our first day-courses and hands-on workshops, the developers provided custom-developed trial versions of the software. This support was instrumental. It allowed us to place powerful, interactive tools directly into the hands of radiologists who were eager to move beyond static teaching methods and adopt a more clinically relevant way of learning.
From a Small Group to a National Momentum
What started as a small cohort of founder members quickly gained momentum. The OsiriX-UK User Group grew into a network of over 300 radiologists across the UK.
By sharing practical “how-to” guides, video tutorials, and anonymization protocols, we did more than teach the use of a software—we built a community and a shared standard. This helped ensure that teaching files were high-quality, consistent, and easily accessible, while also reflecting everyday clinical practice.

A Legacy of Excellence
Looking back, I am incredibly proud of what we achieved. OsiriX remains, in my opinion, the most powerful and intuitive DICOM viewers available in the Mac environment. Its fluidity, advanced 3D post-processing capabilities, and ease of use continue to make it an invaluable tool for both education and research.
I am honored to serve as a Brand Ambassador for OsiriX. More than a decade after we started, the mission remains the same: to support the next generation of radiologists with the right tools and a shared standard for learning.
We owe a great deal to the OsiriX team for their continued support, and I would like to thank every member of the UK User Group who helped turn a vision for better education into a lasting reality.
If you are looking to bring more consistency, interactivity, and clinical realism into your radiology teaching, OsiriX remains an excellent place to start.
